The best-performing digital design and development teams tend to have a common approach to their work, whether software, media, or elearning. From asset management, to project methodology, to design and development, standard practices increase efficiency and quality. The work samples below are parts of an approach that I created with the involvement of an IT training team in 2015.
At left is a media production guide that includes written, spoken, and graphic style.
To arrive at a finished product, I led a team through a series of workshops and conversations over several months. I found that for agreements to stand, it was crucial to allow creative freedom. For that reason, I started with statements of principle and core values. For example, the principle of motivational appeal was the key to gaining acceptance from creatives, so I made it the first principle of written style. From there, specific rules and conventions were much easier to add to our practice.
What are the aspects of project quality? This rubric for elearning describes quality as increasing sophistication (good, better, best) along 16 dimensions.
Graphic quality can be easy to see but hard to describe without a language provided by Gestalt, perceptual, and educational psychology.
Clarity, contiguity, continuity, coherence, field completion, and synchrony are some of the principles of animation and video quality.
Good sound design requires imagination and effort to achieve. Moreover, people's responses to audio are varied and often emotional, so a period of workshopping ideas may be necessary to reach agreement on quality criteria and common conventions.
Voice talent should be as varied and colorful as real life. But in order to achieve diversity, evaluation of voice talent must be objective and principled. Decisions to use one voice and not another should be explainable along comparable criteria.
Accessibility features in digital media make them universally easier to use. Web sites, applications, media, and documents can meet accessibility standards consistently when best practices are built into templates and added to the development routine.
